New England Climate Initative (NECI)

NECI partners:

Climate Change Research Center
Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space
University of New Hampshire
Durham, New Hampshire

Meteorology Program
Natural Science Department
Plymouth State College
Plymouth, New Hampshire
Mount Washington Observatory
North Conway, New Hampshire

New Hampshire State Climatologist's Office
University of New Hampshire
Durham, New Hampshire

Forecast Systems Laboratory
NOAA
Denver, Colorado

Over the next decade NECI partners plan to undertake four major themes that include:

  1. reconstruction of past climate change
  2. air quality and meteorological monitoring
  3. demonstration and evaluation of promising new technologies
  4. public understanding

NECI data will provide a perspective from which modern and future climate and air quality changes can be modeled and assessed. NECI weather initiatives will demonstrate forecast tools which both utilize and generate improved local data, and pilot test improved technologies for explaining weather occurrences to the general public. Together, these activities will develop comprehensive information not heretofore available on what has happened and is happening to climate and air quality in this region.

NECI plans to develop strong links with New England's public and private sectors, with the goal of providing practical predictions for climate change in the form of weather forecasting and analogs for future climate as well as changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere.
